Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use cloth diaper inserts, perfect for enhancing your baby’s comfort while ensuring maximum absorbency.
You can follow along with our steps using your own inserts and diapers at home.
Step 1: Choosing the Right Insert

Start by selecting the appropriate insert for your needs. Inserts come in various materials like microfiber, bamboo, cotton, or hemp.
Microfiber is super absorbent but should not touch the baby’s skin directly, while natural fibers like cotton and bamboo are safe for direct contact and offer excellent absorbency.
Step 2: Prepping Your Inserts

If your inserts are brand new, they’ll need to be prepped.
This means washing them multiple times to increase their absorbency. Natural fibers typically need about 4-6 washes to reach maximum absorbency.
Step 3: Folding for Custom Fit

Depending on the type and size of your diaper, you might need to fold your insert. For newborns, you may need to fold the insert down in the front or back to ensure a snug fit.
For older babies, you might use the insert unfolded.
Step 4: Placing the Insert

Place the insert inside the diaper. If you’re using a pocket diaper, slide the insert into the pocket. If it’s a cover or an all-in-two system, lay the insert on top of the diaper lining.
Ensure it’s flat and positioned to absorb where your baby wets the most.
Step 5: Fitting the Diaper

Once the insert is in place, put the diaper on your baby. Adjust the waist and leg openings to be snug but comfortable.
Ensure there are no gaps around the legs or waist where leaks could occur.

Step 6: Checking for Comfort
Finally, ensure your baby is comfortable.
A properly inserted insert shouldn’t cause any bulkiness or restrict your baby’s movement.
